Careers in Economics


Economics play a very important role in every sector, especially in the wake of globalization. Today post graduate in Economics have opportunities in business, education, government and the non-profit sector.

Private Sector:
There is tremendous potential for economics in the private sector and most notably in scientific research and consulting firms. Consultant firms advise their clients on business strategies, portfolio management, market research, etc.,

Top firms that recruit economists include Mckinsey & Co, Accenture, etc.,

International Organisations:
Organisations such as World Bank, IMF, UNDP and other international banks recruit post graduates in Economics to carry out research, policy making, developing models, financial structure restructuring, project identification, appraisal and supervision.

Public Sector:
Government enterprises, public undertakings frequently call for post graduates in Economics for positions such as Analysts, Statisticians, etc.,

Banking and Insurance:
Both Banking and Insurance Sectors have undergone transformation from traditional banking services to client-centric services. An increasing number of economists are engaged by banks and insurance companies.

Careers in Developmental Studies


It is a multidisciplinary branch of social science which addresses issues of concern to developing countries. It focuses on issues related to social and economic development.

Developmental studies are offered as a specialized Masters’ Degree in a number of Universities. It traces its origin to UK and is today widely taught and researched in many third world countries.

Students of development students often choose careers in International Organisations such as UN or the World Bank, NGOs, private sector firms and research centres.

Job Profile:
International Organisations such as the UNICEF needs Post-Graduates specialized in Development Studies to plan, implement and monitor projects and programs. Further, they may be required to convene strategic partnerships among Government, Non-Government and Community based organizations.

 Skills required:

  • Ability to conceptualise, innovate, plan and execute ideas 
  • Analytical, negotiating, communication and advocacy skills 
  • Good communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Report writing 
  • Managerial skills
